Dear “Friends,”
Our chapters across the country have provided Israeli Soldiers substantial support throughout the years with university scholarships, capital projects, and family support, just to name a few.
Albert Einstein, the great physicist and pacifist once said, “The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.”
In the War of Independence in 1948, which countries sold Israel the most weapons and provided support? Answer – Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union. (Relations between Israel and Eastern Europe markedly worsened in the 1950s).
Which country was a major ally of Israel during the 1956 Suez campaign? Answer – France. (The relationship lasted until the Six Day War in 1967).
Finally, which country for the first 17 years of Israel’s existence did not send any military or economic aid? Answer -The United States. (Only after Israel turned over a captured Russian MIG-21 to the U.S. did President Johnson promise future military supplies).
This is not to say that allies aren’t necessary and important. To quote Winston Churchill, “There is at least one thing worse than fighting with allies – and that is to fight without them.” Allies are extremely important to Israel’s existence but they can be fickle. The Jewish people however, stand together.
Friends, we are committed to supporting the soldiers and the State of Israel.
